Brooklyn Navy Yard Opens New Museum Today

One of the coolest experiences I ever had was when I was working at Brooklyn Community Access Television (BCAT) and I got to go on a behind the scenes tour of the Brooklyn Navy Yard through the offices of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce or some similar organization. Built shortly after the Revolution, it has been at various times a place for shipbuilding and an actual Naval base, and for the last several years it has been a modern industrial park hosting everything from movie studios to more quotidian office suites. It is HUGE -- we toured the grounds on a bus, and it contains tons of buildings from historic old Admiral's houses to a derelict hospital building to -- the very coolest part -- the old dry docks, now completely dry, and simply enormous, as of course they must be. You've seen this setting in countless movies.
Now, the Yard has been off limits to the general public for as long as it has existed. Today all that has changed. A new museum called Building 92 opens today, with its first exhibit Brooklyn Navy Yard's Past, Present and Future. This is a great chance to experience a huge part of Brooklyn, New York and American history. To find out how to experience it, go here.
